This time, on July of 2011, I worked with urban planners Kevser Ustundag (Mimar Sinan University), Meltem Parlak, Arzu Erturan, and Erman Topgul on their project for Yalova’s new transporation system. The question was how to explain their plans and methods to the citizens clearly and with min phrases. In a very short amount of time (1.5 days i guess), they explained what was going on, and we did these ‘funny’ looking visual explanations. Introducing: “Envisioning Information For Istanbul: The Study Of A Guide Design As An Urban Visual Interface To Improve Usability Of The City”. My MA thesis is about an instructional guide for Istanbul that tries to meet the purpose of “making the city observable”. It’s not a regular tourist guide, but an interactive manual on how to perform in Istanbul for a native or foreigner. The scope is on how to manage the design process and how to design the guide.

This poster is the outcome of the Image of Science workshop which was held at Sabanci University in July 2010. Similar to the first project, the aim was to collaborate with a scientist to create clear narratives for scientific knowledge and reveal complex information that belong to various disciplines. In this project, I worked with Erdem Öztürk, who completed his PHD degree on mechatronics engineering in the summer of 2010. We worked on his thesis “Modeling Dynamics of Parallel Turning Operations”.

Platform members worked hard on how to suggest a new urban plan for Sulukule against municipality’s own plan. My job was to make the maps more understandable and presentable.

In these diagrams, the process of eviction in Sulukule – a neighborhood in Istanbul where Romanian citizen used to live – is depicted. The process shows how municipality’s intention for urban renovation in Sulukule progressed while demolishing Romanian settlements without their consent. The maps were designed both in English and Turkish for Rotterdam Architectural Biennial, exhibited at Rotterdam in 2009 and Istanbul in 2010.

This poster is designed in collaboration with the faculty of engineering and natural sciences – material sciences and engineering program. A graduate paper was redesigned as an academic poster using proper information design methods. The result is the visual explanation of a scientific paper, which originally contains mostly textual information and charts.
